Probiotics

A Natural Balance

Contessa encourages the use of probiotics in shrimp farming. Probiotics successfully and naturally improve water quality and reduce the pollution level of outgoing water flow, so they're good for the overall sustainability of the environment.

The term "probiotics" refers to a single or mixed species of live microorganism (good bacteria) that can provide the following beneficial effects to shrimp health and water quality.

  • Probiotics create a friendlier, less-stressful environment for shrimp. This means that shrimp are less likely to become sick, and the need for antibiotics is reduced.
  • Probiotics limit or exclude harmful bacteria and reduce the level of infection and mortality in shrimp.
  • Probiotics compete for food with disease-causing bacteria, diminishing their presence in ponds.
  • Probiotics produce enzymes that promote the breakdown of organic waste (dead algae, uneaten food, etc.) resulting in a cleaner, healthier pond.
  • Probiotics balance algae growth, which is important to the stability of the pond environment, by providing it with nutrients from degraded organic waste.
  • Probiotics optimize the shrimp's immune system and increase its resistance to disease.
